It’s been a seriously busy few weeks here in Tailored HQ. With Berlinale, JETS, organising distribution for The Lodgers and last – but by no means least – celebrating our IFTA win, we’ve barely had enough time to catch our breath!
The bright lights and buzz of Berlinale had us heading to the German capital for a few days this week. As one of our favourite events of the year, we were delighted to be back in Berlin to meet some like minded filmmakers – and to imbibe in a stein or two!
Though we were also at Berlinale to catch up with distributors, co-producers and of course, filmmaker friends, one of the main reasons we were in Berlin was to pitch our upcoming project Hive Mind at JETS 2018. The JETS Co-Production Initiative is funded and supported by FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Irish Film Board, HessenFilm und Medien GmbH, nordmedia, The Finnish Film Foundation and Telefilm Canada and brings together filmmakers from Ireland, Germany, Canada, Finland and the UK to pitch their upcoming projects to potential distributors and co-producers. We were delighted to see such a strong Irish contingent there this year and are looking forward to following up on some of the interesting projects that were pitched.
One thing that we are absolutely over the moon about this week was The Lodgers’ big win at the IFTAs. The film won in the VFX category beating out industry behemoths like Game of Thrones. A huge congrats are due to Ben O’Connor, Aoife Noonan, Julianne Forde and Oisin O’Neill for their much deserved award. Special shout-out to Alan Foley and Ray Sullivan for their great contribution to VFX too.
The Irish release for The Lodgers is fast approaching and we can’t wait for you all to catch a glimpse of our gothic ghost story. The Lodgers will be shown at the following Irish cinemas from March 9th:
The Lodgers will also be enjoying it’s American release this weekend. If you’re Stateside, you can catch the film in the following theatres from today:
We are absolutely buzzed to be donning our very best ‘Tailored’ attire in attendance of the Irish Film and Television Awards this Thursday night in Dublin with our upcoming film, THE LODGERS, up for three awards.
We’re up for Best Costume Design (Sara Jane Ffrench O’Carroll), Best Production Design (Joe Fallover) and Best Visual Effects (Tailored Films and Bowsie Workshop).
The film has already begun to develop a buzz around it following its Toronto Film Festival Debut last September. It’s already garnered three awards and was the Closing Gala Film at Sitges International Film Festival last October.
The IFTAs also sees other members of THE LODGERS team up for nominations: Cinematogrpaher Richard Kendrick for SONG OF GRANITE, Deirdre O’Kane for Supporting Actress in HALAL DADDY and Moe Dunford for his supporting Actor in VIKINGS.
The Tailored crew will be attending alongside our nominees and we hope to come home with an award or two. Best of luck to all the nominees in all the categories – it’s an honour to be part of such a celebration of Irish talent!
We’re also thrilled to announce that THE LODGERS will see its release across selected cinemas in Ireland on March 9th. Keep an eye out for more details as to where you can catch the film when it’s released!
The Lodgers are being pulled from the shadows and into the sun for two premieres this coming week!
We’re absolutely delighted to announce that The Lodgers shall be enjoying both its European and American premieres in the next week. Our first premiere of the week is taking place tomorrow and shall bring team Tailored to the sunny shores of Sitges for the acclaimed Sitges International Film Festival. The festival, celebrating it’s 50th birthday this year, is the most prestigious fantasy film festival in the world, showcasing the best and brightest fantasy and horror films during its weeklong span. Of course Tailored Films is no stranger to Sitges as our first feature Stitches premiered there way back in 2012. As a credit to its brilliance (if we do say so ourselves) The Lodgers has been awarded the honour of being the closing film for the festival in its semicentennial year. Tickets for the closing gala can be bought here.
As serious horror lovers here at Tailored Films, we couldn’t be more excited to announce that The Lodgers will be having its Stateside premiere at Screamfest. Held in Los Angeles every October, Screamfest is the largest and longest running horror film festival in North America. The festival is home to the scariest, most imaginative horror films in the world and has been credited for the discovery of many horror greats such as Paranormal Activity which premiered there in 2007. The Lodgers shall be having its Screamfest debut on October 17th. Tickets can be bought here.
The Lodgers was produced by Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde of Tailored Films and financed by the Irish Film Board and Epic Pictures Group. The film was directed by the visionary Brian O’ Malley and written by the inimitable David Turpin. Among the wonderful stars of the film include newcomer Charlotte Vega, Bill Milner (iBoy, Son of Rambow), David Bradley (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones), Eugene Simon (Game of Thrones), Deirdre O’Kane (Noble) and Moe Dunford (Vikings). Patrick Ewald, Shaked Berenson, Macdara Kelleher and Rory Gilmartin were Executive Producers on the film and deserve every ounce of praise they’ve received for its creation.
The Lodgers have found a new home…..
We’re so excited to announce that our most recent feature film ‘The Lodgers’ has been chosen as part of the official selection for the Contemporary World Cinema category at TIFF. This will be the film’s World Premiere and we are chuffed that the film will be screened during the highly competitive opening weekend on September 8th and 9th. As TIFF is considered to be one of the top 4 A list festivals in the world, it is a real honor for this small Irish ghost story to be part of the selection. Made in collaboration with the Irish Film Board and Epic Pictures, The Lodgers is sure to ensnare it’s audience with it’s compelling and haunting narrative.
The Lodgers is set 1920’s, rural Ireland. Anglo Irish twins Rachel and Edward share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence (The Lodgers) which enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. When troubled war veteran Sean returns to the nearby village, he is immediately drawn to the mysterious Rachel, who in turn begins to break the rules set out by The Lodgers. The consequences pull Rachel into a deadly confrontation with her brother – and with the curse that haunts them.

Our sister company, the Digital Film School, has just wrapped up the first week of Make a Movie courses! The Digital Film School has been running a 5 day course that teaches teenagers all aspects of filmmaking from editing and acting to directing and lighting for the last 12 years!
This year’s first two courses in Dalkey and Swords were fantastic, the students learned a lot and were genuinely interested in the filmmaking process. After speaking with a few of them, it is very clear how this course has inspired them to further their knowledge and passion for film.
You can watch the “behind the scenes” videos for these courses on the Digital Film School’s YouTube channel!
After brief classroom instruction the students take the art of filmmaking into their own hands. Every student is assigned a role (director, actor, camera person etc.) and uses their new knowledge to fulfil the duties that come along with each position. Slowly
the students watch all of the pieces come together as they complete the course. These new skills allow for the students to create an entire short film completely written and produced by them, as well as watch it with the pride of a job well done and confidence in their newfound abilities.
Each student receives a USB drive containing their finished film and the films are then entered into prestigious international youth film festivals such as the Fresh Film Festival in Dublin! We are so proud of this week’s students and we are looking forward to see what the rest of the summer courses will bring!
Hello! My name is Juliana and I’m the new intern for Tailored Films! I recently graduated from Salisbury University in the States. My major requires me to do an internship. I thought it would be an amazing opportunity to complete it here in Dublin with Tailored Films. Unfortunately I will only be with Tailored Films until early August but I am very excited to see what they have in store for me. This is only my third day and I have already been able to do so much!
Caroline, one of the producers here, and I were able to attend Facebook for the Arts at the Facebook European Headquarters here in Dublin. The building was amazing; there were tons of fun decorations and everything about it promoted creativity. There were beautiful paintings on all of the walls done by Facebook’s talented resident artist and the view of Dublin from the top floor was breathtaking!
The event was full of creative people and businesses all there to learn the same thing: how to use Facebook and Instagram to make their business successful. There were so many amazing speakers and they each had very helpful information to share. We learned a bit about the future of mobile and what it means for businesses as well as the creative and practical uses for a business Facebook or Instagram page.
There was a panel of four business owners that included the head of the Project Arts Centre as well as the head of First Contact Music, who have all become extremely successful because of all of the business tools provided by the Facebook. The panel really expressed how their Facebook pages had way more audience interaction than their official websites because Facebook allows them to actually engage with their audience on a more personal level.
We’re excited to put these tips and tricks to the test! Hopefully you’ll be able to keep up with us on Facebook and Instagram as we dive into more projects this summer!
We’re delighted to announce that our most recent feature film, the gothic horror ‘The Lodgers’, written by David Turpin and directed by Brian O’Malley has just been fully completed as of early May 2017. The post production was a very intensive process that took over six months to complete, and involved many different talent parties, including editor Tony C. Kearns, the sound design skills of the Avatar Post Audio team, Eugene McCrystal and his colour grading team at Outer Limits, Bowsie Workshop and a number of freelance VFX artists for all the CG elements, and David Turpin, Stephen Shannon and Kevin Murphy; our extremely talented composers. Post production supervision was overseen by producer Julianne Forde and a huge amount of post work and assisting was undertaken by our in-house editor Oisin O’Neill.
The film is off to the Cannes Film Market which is part of the Cannes Film Festival and here it will be showcased to distributors privately by our sales agents Epic Pictures in their booth at the Grand Hotel. The poster was released this week exclusively on Dread Central http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/228233/exclusive-lodgers-poster-will-see/ and it was designed by Brian O’Malley. The image features the twins (Charlotte Vega and Bill Milner) in front of the legendary Loftus Hall. One twin is floating above, while the other is reflected ominously just below the surface of the water; this is very much in keeping with the supernatural themes within the story. The reflections idea was originated by producer Forde before O’Malley added his own style to it and perfected the design, just in time for the Cannes launch. We hope that the film will be released to the public later in the year and we are focused on a number of possible festival launches also.
We can’t wait to share further updates on the film with you over the coming months, including teaser trailers and other images from on set. Watch this space! #thelodgersmovie
Other news – Creative Europe Development Funding
In other news, we are very excited that our IFB project in development ‘The Winter Lake’ has received single project development funding from Creative Europe and therefore will be developed with the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union http://www.creativeeuropeireland.eu/media/news/articles/six-irish-companies-receive-280k-in-latest-round-of-creative-europe-media-d
This dark gothic drama is written by David Turpin and will be directed by award winning shorts director Phil Sheerin. The team at Tailored hope to bring the project into production in the first half of 2018.
In early 2016 we were lucky enough to produce films for two permanent exhibitions with audio visual content. The first was an exhibition on Padraig Pearse in the Pearse Museum, Rathfarnam. We produced content about his early life, his writing and his life as a Rebel during the 1916 Rising. Below are a few images from the exhibition. We also produced content for an exhibition about the Presentation Sisters in Killenard, Co. Laois.
2016 also saw our children’s adventure tv series ‘Spooky Stakeout’ turn into a feature film! The film (which was voted the most popular show on RTE Swipe TV) was made into a feature length version thanks to additional funding from MPI Media Group, and was released on DVD in October 2016 and was broadcast on RTE2 on Halloween Day. The film sees the return of Team Spooky – this time solving a mystery in a haunted castle! The original cast (Lioyd Hogan, Zena Donnelly, Harry Behan and Tadhg Moran) were joined by new cast member, Lauren Kinsella (You’re Ugly Too, They Shoot People).
We also went into production with our 5th RTE children’s drama series. Miss Mogul is a mystery series which follows two twin sisters.. When outgoing Katie is poisoned by a member of her video blog crew, shy and quiet Emily is forced to assume her outgoing identical twin sister’s identity to investigate the culprit. We had a lot of fun shooting this with our talented cast and crew. Miss Mogul aired on RTE2 on September 30th and ran for ten weeks. You can still catch the episodes on the SwipeTV app.
In September we went into production with our gothic horror feature film – The Lodgers (funded by the Irish Film Board and US Sales Agent Epic Pictures). The film was directed by Brian O’ Malley and written by David Turpin. The shoot took us all over the country including two weeks of filming in Ireland’s most haunted house, Loftus Hall!
The Lodgers is set in 1920’s rural Ireland during its War of Independence and tells the story of Anglo Irish twins Rachel and Edward who are just about to turn 18. They reside in a crumbling manor on the edge of a village, where they have lived alone since their parents’ untimely death. Except they are not entirely alone – for they share the house with an unseen spiritual force which resides in the basement, known only as The Lodgers. The twins must live by very strict rules set out by The Lodgers, or face unknown and devastating punishments.
Our talented cast included Spanish actress Charlotte Vega, UK actors Bill Milner (X-Men First Class, Anthropoid) Eugene Simon (Game of Thrones), David Bradley (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones), along with Irish Talent Deirdre O’ Kane, Moe Dunford (Vikings) and Roisin Murphy. The film is in post production and due for release in 2017. Follow #thelodgersmovie for more updates.
And most recently, we produced a promo for our next feature film (we hope!). Winter Lake is supported in development by the Irish Film Board with the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, and is written (once again) by the talented David Turpin. It is directed by the award winning short film director Phil Sheerin.
The film is a gothic coming of age tale about a young boy who uncovers a dark secret in a turlough (seasonal lake) which sets in motion a series of unsettling events involving his mysterious neighbours.
A very Merry Christmas from all at Tailored Films. We have some exciting projects lined up for 2017 so watch this space!
We spent last weekend in Leek in the Peak district in Staffordshire filming a promo for a feature film project we’re developing called The Winter Lake. The script is written by David Turpin (The Lodgers) and the director attached is the award winning short director and NFTS graduate, Phil Sheerin. It has been funded in development by the Irish Film Board with the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and we’re hopeful that this support will continue as we move towards financing and hopefully production in late 2017.
The film is a gothic coming of age tale about a young boy who uncovers a dark secret in a turlough (seasonal lake) which sets in motion a series of unsettling events involving his mysterious neighbours. We worked with a great crew on the promo including director of photography Alistair Little (NFTS graduate).
We’ll keep you posted as the project progresses in development! Here are some photos from the shoot:
